Not to be confused with the Internet.
The World Wide Web (WWW) is a network of interconnected electronic documents, so called webpages or websites, that exists on the Internet. Websites have addresses (such as www.example.com). The World Wide Web is not synonymous with Internet, but it is probably its best known service so people sometimes think they are the same.
Webpages are normally written in HTML and can refer to each other by hyperlinks («clickable» links right in the text). The Web itself works on top of the HTTP/HTTPS protocols, which dictates how clients and servers communicate. Less knowledgeable people confuse the Web with the Internet, this is not correct as the Web is just one of many services existing on the Internet (other ones being e.g. E-Mail, FTP, Gopher, Usenet newsgroups, so on). In order to browser the Web, an Internet connection and a Web browser are needed.
