# Computer

A computer (Q68 on Wikidata) is a machine that carries out calculations. Before computers were invented the word computer used to refer to a person performing calculations.

The first computers were mechanical, then electromechanical and analog. Modern computers are fully electronic and digital, i.e. working with discrete values (typically two values: 0 and 1) instead of continuous values such as voltage.

Computer science and mathematics study computers using various computational models, strongest of which is the Turing machine (and its equivalents).
